Did you know that mowing your lawn is a bigger polluter then driving? A 2001 Swedish study concluded, “Air pollution from cutting grass for an hour with a gasoline powered lawn mower is about the same as that from a 100-mile automobile ride.”
54 million Americans mow their lawns each weekend with gas-powered mowers. According to the EPA as much as five percent of the nation’s air pollution, can be attributed to cutting lawns.
Statistics for this vary across websites and research. The one thing that is clear is that mowing your lawn with a gas mower does contribute to air pollution. There are a couple of things individuals and companies can do to reduce this pollution. Reducing the amount of lawn you have helps reduce mowing time. Adding gardens or letting the lawn become more meadows and natural habitats can do this. These ideas not only help to reduce pollution but also create beautiful new landscape features on corporate headquarters and home gardens.
