As we look at environmental impact we need to consider many factors including increases in population, less available land for farming and less overall resources. Further, looking at these factors, we have to address growing population’s needs. Because of this we need to assess the feasibility of what is truly achievable and what is not.
The cotton industry is a good example of what is being done to improve sustainability efforts and increasing their yield. Cotton farmers recognized that using fewer pesticides is better for the environment and also better for their bottom line. Over a period of time they have been able to dramatically reduce the amount of pesticides they use on their crops. By reducing pesticides, they are not only reducing the chemicals applied, but they are reducing their cost and improving the way they operate their businesses. Family farms are truly interested in what it means to be sustainable.
These farmers know that they need to preserve the land for future generations just as the land had been preserved for them. They are partnering with a variety of experts to solve problems using integrated pest control. Integrated pest control includes using insects like ladybugs to manage crop destruction.
