One can expect to see goats and herders at Chicago O’Hare airport this month. According to the author of Stuck at the Airport blog, Harriet Baskas, goats provide sustainable vegetation management grazing services. The organization that was awarded the contract is Central Commissary Holdings, LLC. Using goats benefits the airport in several ways.
Goats reduce maintenance cost on equipment, eliminate fuel costs and the goats actually do a much better job getting in hard to reach areas. Who would have thought that one day we would see goats’ cohabitating with airplanes? It makes very good sense. Let’s see how it works out.
Spokesperson Karen Pride says, “The CDA, Chicago Department of Aviation, strives to be the most sustainable airport in the country. O’Hare currently has a soil free aerologic garden in one terminal growing vegetables that are used by many airport restaurants. There are also beehives on the property and several other good for the earth initiatives are underway.
